To Whom it May Concern:
Thank you for taking the time to view this site and take a more comprehensive look at my background and experience. I have contacted your organization because I feel my work experience, education, and personal ideologies match well with your mission and strategies. My objective to improve the health and wellness of domestic and global communities through evidence based public health programs, leveraging health information technologies, engaging patients, and developing community partnerships.
In my 14 years of professional experience I have used variety of levers to drive the improvement of health and healthcare in populations from 600 to 330 million. For the past two years, I have led the Community Health Department at Centura Health as the Executive Director of the HealthSET and LINKS programs and as the Director of Grants Strategy and Implementation. In these positions I managed 25 staff and $1.5M in programming and secured $2.4M in federal, state and private grants, including a $1M grant from the Center for Medicaid and Medicare Services to enroll eligible but not enrolled children and families in Medicaid and the Children's Insurance Health Program. I implemented electronic medical records and doubled the patient volume for HealthSET , a free mobile wellness program for seniors living in low-income housing. I standardized workflows and public communication, implemented an outreach program, and created a SalesForce tracking system for Centura Health LINKS, a program that assists low-income seniors and families access health insurance.
Previously, I worked as a subject matter expert and strategic communications manager at Booz Allen Hamilton, where I supported and led federal initiatives on cancer prevention, hospital and ambulatory quality improvement, patient engagement and patient safety, the spread of health information technology, suicide prevention, support for wounded warriors, and promotion of the state insurance marketplaces for agencies under the Department of Health and Human Service (HHS), Veterans Affairs (VA), and the Department of Defense (DoD). For the National Partnership for Women and Families I supported pioneer communities for the Aligning Forces for Quality as a technical assistance provider for the Robert Wood Johnson Foundation, traveling across the country to multi-stakeholder collaboratives, disseminating best practices in patient engagement.
After studying maternal and child health during my MPH at George Washington University, I was recruited to teach the final management course for graduate students where I conducted lectures on application-based approaches to improving community health and the value of an integrated approach to addressing social determinates of health. During my Master's education I also worked as an evaluation and outreach expert to a number of local non-profits the American Psychological Association and the DC Department of Health and Department of Healthcare Finance. At a direct service level, I worked with homeless and mentally ill individuals as a crisis case manager at a community behavioral health center in Lawrence, KS. I also served as a Peace Corps Volunteer and engaged a small community on the Niger/Nigeria border in preventative health practices such as breastfeeding, pre-natal nutrition, immunizations, family planning, and disease prevention.
Throughout my career, there have been many successes, but I am most inspired by state and regional multi-stakeholder collaborations where community partners remain close to the institutions they wish to change. With experience in federal, state, local, and private institutions, I am currently seeking a position with an organization that supports evidence-based, integrated solutions to local challenges that leverage technology, quality measurement and reporting, grant funding opportunities, and multi-stakeholder partnerships.
I look forward to adding my knowledge and experience to your organization. Thank you for your time and consideration.
Sincerely,
Cristen Bates
